STUDENT CASE STUDY

7th-grader Closes Learning Gaps and Navigates Transition to High School

Background

When Ella’s parents contacted us she was in 7th grade. She faced a variety of academic challenges, and had a hard time with algebra in particular. In addition to learning gaps from the pandemic years,  she’d recently changed schools, and had a turbulent start with four different teachers in the first month. We matched her with a Premium Tutor that has a background in mathematics and a track record of helping students gain confidence. Ella worked intensively with her tutor throughout the 7th grade to bridge gaps in key subjects, especially algebra. After some time – and commendable effort by Ella – she began to feel more caught-up on the knowledge she’d missed and hit a successful stride in middle school. By the time Ella reached 9th grade, the support dynamic from her tutor shifted from teacher to mentor as Ella depended on tutoring less and less. Ella was able to turn the middle school years of uncertainty into strengths that she could leverage in her high school journey.

Approach

  • We identified gaps in Ella’s learning due to the pandemic and school changes, and hand-selected the most compatible tutor for her academic needs.
  • With her tutor’s support, Ella successfully navigated a challenging start to algebra and passed the class.
  • Thanks to her hard work, Ella entered high school with a higher level of confidence and academic stability. Her tutor went from being highly relied-upon to an as-needed support role as Ella learned to tackle challenges on her own.

Outcome

Ella, now a 9th-grader, is thriving academically. She has undergone a transformation from struggling to now confident and successful. It’s one of many scenarios that fuel Applerouth’s core mission: helping students cultivate self-belief can change their lives.
