Often a young adult’s first major decision is deciding where to attend college. Kim Roman prides herself on helping her students gain acceptances from their first choice schools. After working as the College and Career Center Coordinator for two different Fulton County high schools, she founded her company, Custom College Planning, in 2005. Custom College Planning provides a personalized plan, tailored to the student’s interests, abilities, and goals.

Kim’s college counseling and school social work background allow her to understand the emotional, social, and academic needs of each student, and how those factors impact the family during the college application process. Since there are several college and career options, students must be prepared with current information, focused planning, and informed decision-making skills. Kim identifies potential opportunities and pitfalls, and helps students create clearly defined plans to accomplish their college application work early.

Kim advises students to begin their preliminary college research during their freshmen or sophomore years. Early planning can help students research scholarships and schedule the appropriate classes, as well as, engage in meaningful extracurricular and summer activities. During junior year, students should be studying for and taking the SAT/ACT, visiting schools, assuming leadership positions and working hard to get the best grades possible. A dynamic college list should be created to allow plenty of time for research and college visits. The summer before senior year is the ideal time to create a final list of “best fit“ colleges and start college essays; however, it is never too late to begin.

Regardless of the start date, Kim believes that students who take the lead in the college application process feel ownership over the choices they make, which results in a smoother transition, less stress and a better chance of a successful college experience.

Kim holds Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Communications, with a minor in Theatre, as well as a Master’s degree in Social Work, with a School Social Work concentration. She also has a Graduate Certificate in College Counseling from UCLA and maintains memberships in NACAC, SACAC and HECA. She regularly speaks at schools, libraries and other community venues.

Kim Roman works out of her Alpharetta, Georgia office, but also works remotely via Skype.
